During the podcast about Agnes Martin, an idea came up that described that beauty is held within your mind, it isn’t held withing your eyes and your sight. Agnes held a rose out to her granddaughter and asked if she thought the rose was beautiful, she replied with a yes. Agnes proceeded to hold the rose behind her back and ask the same question. She explained that even though you can’t see the rose, it’s the thought and the creation in one’s mind which gives the rose it’s beauty. In her painting, With My Back To The World, she uses lines and a type of grid in order to create her masterpiece. However, when John Green was able to experience this painting, he began to cry, why is that? I believe that this painting means many different thing to people, and each person can interpret it in a much more meaningful and deep way. If stared at long enough, stories can be formed, whether they are about Agnes or even yourself. It allows the freedom of the viewer to sculpt their own interpretations in their mind. That is why I believe John Green cried while staring at the painting.
