In Nathaniel Mary Quinn’s artwork, “Mend”, it portrays many colors and many abstract themes to correspond with it. The multiple collages of what seems to be random colorful pieces of paper, gives me the impression that the artist is trying to explain that all humans and individuals have wild imaginations, and colorful and crazy ideas. Not one idea is the same to the other either. We all create our own scenarios and thoughts in our mind which are drastically different from one another. We all receive and take in certain situations and ideas in completely different ways which is another reason why Quinn decided to include this colorful collage in the mind of the subject. As shown in my chosen image, the vast amounts of colors that are streaming out of the head also gives the impression and creates this type of theme that our thoughts and ideas flow naturally. However, these ideas can also not relate to one another which gives us the ability to obtain a wild imagination. The contrast of colors between the subject’s body and it’s head also shows us that no other place in our body is as imaginative as our minds, not even our hearts. Everything relates back to the mind and no matter what, our mind will be filled with beautiful and wild thoughts. Everyone is different and everyone is going to have their own beautiful opinions and vibrant ideas. Also, in Nathaniel’s painting, the differing images could also indicate that we must find someone else to relate our ideas with in order to fully complete them. These random images give me the impression that they could be part of a puzzle piece, Quinn could have randomized these images in order to show the viewer that not a single thought will be complete without its other half. The saying “great minds think alike”, can relate to this art piece because in some situations, you must find someone with the other half of your idea in order to fully grasp the thoughts inside your mind. We will not be able to fully understand and comprehend an idea until we find the matching pieces to the puzzle from others, in our minds. We come by random people every day, and I believe that the ones that make a difference in your life are the ones that can fill in the missing pieces to the puzzle. You never usually remember all of the strangers and people that you meet in your lifetime, but the ones you do are most likely the ones that were able to help complete your thoughts and help you form those complete ideas that you have been questioning for so long. Everyone comes into your life for a reason, but not all of them will be remembered, their impact on you will dictate whether or not they will be remembered or forgotten, and whether or not they can complete a piece of you is also a very large dictator on whether they get remembered or not. Another great point that Quinn most likely tried to bring up is imperfections. No one in this entire world is perfect, we are human and mistakes and special different qualities are normal and should not be frowned upon when someone has them. As shown in the image, not a single one of the pictures that are part of the collage are similar. Not a single one matches another, and they almost don’t create a completed face. This shows that perfection is something that is reached for by a lot of people but most likely will never be achieved. Everyone has their specialties and are broken apart in their own ways which makes everyone special and unique in their own way, but does not make them perfect. People must embrace their imperfections in order to reach some sort of clarity within themselves. Even though you might not be perfect, you can always act with an exceeded amount of self confidence in order to make yourself feel perfect.
